What to expect during your appointment
On arrival
On arrival at Sutherland's Pharmacy please wait near the doorway to the car-park at the rear of the shop. I will come down and escort you up the stairs to the clinic rooms.
Your appointment -Physiotherapy
In the clinic room I will:
1. Ask you about what has brought you to my service. This will include questions about your medical history and your lifestyle such as working environment and hobbies.
2. Assess you physically, examine the part of your body relevant to your presenting issue. This normally will involve your removing clothing so I can see clearly, and if relevant, feel the tissues affected. A low back pain examination for example will normally require that you undress to your underwear so I can see your back and your pelvis and hips.
If you are not comfortable with exposing your body that is not a problem. Please wear tight fitting and flexible clothing such as leggings so that I can see your body without you needing to remove your clothing.
3. Treatment planning. We will sit together and discuss the assessment findings and build a treatment plan together that you will be able to integrate into your everyday life. Depending on your condition, situation and preference this could be a plan you practice independently at home, or it could involve coming back for treatment sessions with me. I may also refer you on to another practitioner for their expertise or specialist intervention.
4. Conclusion. After your appointment I will send you a summary email describing the findings of your appointment and any treatment recommendations. This may include a link to an exercise programme on Physitrak.

Your appointment -Acupuncture
Acupuncture is not suitable for everyone. In the booking form for acupuncture therapy you will be asked a selection of questions. This is a screening form to check that acupuncture is safe for you to have as a treatment approach. If you are struggling with this form please just get in touch and we can discuss the questions and I can make the booking for you. The screening questions can be seen via the button below:

Acupuncture normally is most effective when given at a frequency of 2x per week during the treatment period. I offer discounted treatment bundles for 6 sessions of acupuncture therapy here.
Acupuncture requires skin exposure for the needle insertion. Often needles are inserted at locations distant to where you are experiencing pain or discomfort. Normally I would only require that you expose body parts at the needle insertion sites so you can keep much of your clothing on and expose parts of your body as required.

4. Treatment. I insert single use needles into various parts of your body and move the needles gently. I then let you rest for periods of 2-4 minutes at a time before revisiting each needle in turn, moving it and assessing your bodies response to the needle. The treatment dose is dependent on your condition and varies according to needle location, amount of needle stimulation and the duration of needle placement.

4. Conclusion. After your appointment I advise you to take some time to centre yourself before returning to your everyday life. On early appointments I suggest you organise your day to allow for some recovery and assimilation of the treatment. This could be simply reducing the number of appointments you have later in the day on your first treatment.

Your appointment -Massage
In the clinic room I will:
1. Ask you about what has brought you to my service. This will include questions about your medical history and your lifestyle such as working environment and hobbies.
2. Assess you physically, examine the part of your body relevant to your presenting issue. This normally will involve your removing clothing so I can see clearly, and if relevant, feel the tissues affected.
3. Choice. You have a choice as to what position you would like to be massaged. Often this is lying on your front on the physio plinth (couch), but it can also be seated or lying on your back or either side. You also have a choice about what you would like your massage to focus on, e.g. on your low back or shoulders. It is up to you how much or little clothing you remove for the massage, I use a blanket to cover areas I am not focusing on.
